Presentation

From the age of 15, Jacques Charlier is self-taught and goes through art history books. His career as an artist began at the dawn of the sixties and was part of movements such as Pop Art. At that time, accompanied by his sidekick Marcel Broodthaers, he traveled through Belgian galleries at the forefront of minimal and conceptual art and made friends with artists such as Kosuth, Toroni and Buren. In 1986, he took part in the legendary “Chambre d'Amis” exhibition in Ghent, directed by Jan Hoet. Today, Charlier's works are present in many museums in Belgium and in particular in France, Germany, the Netherlands, Luxembourg and the United States. In Charlier's work, nothing is left to chance. A fine connoisseur of art history, he revisits it with irony and agility, questioning the art system with black humor. He plays with art through art. The starting point of her work is the idea she wants to convey. Before getting down to work, he creates a script, like a director. His works must above all arouse an attentive and critical eye. Then, he builds his creation with several media, as long as it is ideal for the final object of his work, hence his indifference to a specific medium (painting, photography, electric guitar, writing, etc. comics, sculpture, video…). 2016 “Panorama”, BPS22, Charleroi, BE. “From Broodthaers to Braeckman: Photography in the visual arts in Belgium”, Muhka, Antwerpen, BE. “The importance of being”, Museum of Modern Art, Rio de Janeiro, BRAZIL. 2015 “Painting for All! »Mac's Grand Hornu, Hornu, BE. 2009 “100 sexes of artists”, 53rd Venice Biennale, IT. 1999 “Art Forever”, Casino, Luxembourg, LUX. “Confidential objects, The combat tickle”, Palais des Beaux-Arts, Brussels, BE. 1994 “Art upside down”, FRAC Nord-Pas-de-Calais, Dunkirk, FR. “Jacques Charlier explains himself”, Louvain-la-Neuve Museum, BE. 1989 “Mystical, genre and war painting”, Museum of Modern Art, Villeneuve d'Ascq, FR. 1986 "Guest room", SMAK, Ghent, BE. 1983 “In the rules of the art”, Palais des Beaux-Arts, Brussels, BE.
