Presentation

Wang Wusheng was born in 1945, he is a Chinese photographer from the province of Anhui. He graduated from the Physics school from the Anhui university. His career as a photographer began in 1973 for a magazine in Anhui, namely Anhui Newsphoto and Pictorial. The following year, he began taking photos of Huang mounts, which made him famous. In 1981, he left for Japan, and became a member of the Japan Foundation in 1983. He also studied at the Arts institute at Nihon University, after having received a grant from the Japanese foundation to study Japanese art. Wang Wusheng began rubbing shoulders with Haiku and Zen aesthete poets during his experiences in Japan. He studied for three years at the University of Arts in Tokyo. He then moved to USA and spent a year over there, before moving back to Asia. He now lives between Tokyo and Shanghai.

Huang mounts are rather important in his artistic career. They are part of his childhood memories, and have inspired many of his photos. In the photo shots of these mountains, one sees a reference to a traditional drawing in Indian ink. Wang Wusheng is an expert when it comes to transforming landscapes into "inner worlds": "these mountains aren't mountains, they are mountains of my spirit, they're spiritual, black, grey and white, balanced and turned into energy". Through the illustrations with striking contrasts between the sky and Earth, and capturing the intense luminosity of clouds, the artist explores utopian visions which are enigmatic but also ethereal.

The 90's were a major turning point for the artist's international fame. Mainly 1998, when his photos were exhibited at the art history museum of Vienna, first photography exhibition and the first exhibition of a living artist for the institution. For the 60 years celebration of UNO in 2005, Wusheng exhibited along side the Japanese artist, Kaii Higashiyama in the lobby of the General Assembly. Photos of Wang Wusheng are also part of several private and public collections like the Friedrich Christian Flick in Berlin, the art history museum in Vienna, the national art museum in Beijing, China, the Shanghai art museum, the metropolitan photography museum in Tokyo, Robert Klein gallery in Boston, Art Krems museum in Austria, not to mention Russia, USA and Ukraine.
