Mate

Mate, young Chinese artist from the old imperial capital Xi’an, has created a unique style of photography, where provocation and contrasts are finding their source in other famous Asian photographers’ work such as Araki, Daido Moriyama or Reng Hang. In black and white or in colours, MATE finds a balance between poetic and fierce imagery. Mate's photographs aim at highlighting contrasts defining modern and urban China under Xi Jingping’s rule in 2018, where art must outrun censorship to exist.
