Yiqiang WU

Born in 1970 - China

Wu Yiqiang was born in 1970 in the mountains of Ailao in Yunnan. In 1990 he got his Fine Arts diploma from the Yunnan Art Institute.

In 1998, tea and reading the newspapers were his only way of having fun. Wu Yiqiang started producing a body of work that uses a unique medium: newspaper sheets. The seriousness of the articles fades little by little after the transformations and distortions that happen during this process. His work is the product of reality, a reality that is harsh and linked to his social environment.

For him, the words on a newspaper sheet can't exist on their own, they form an inter-textual relationship with the images. Thus, in 2003, his new series have two aspects: on the one hand, the falsification and the treatment of the image give to information pages in newspapers a new meaning, very different from their original content. On the other hand, the true meaning of the text becomes absurd as the visual information conveyed by the new images can often lead to all kinds of misunderstandings.

Faced to Wu Yiqiang's newspaper series, we can reflect upon art, political culture, individual conscience and other subjects while appreciating their graphic, plastic and aesthetic aspects. His work is full of imagination, irony and humor and his series have profound meanings. The different painting techniques (watercolor and ink) and an innovative support reflect the artist's "Bad boy", uncompromising style.
