Kura Shomali

Born in: 1979

Democratic Republic of Congo

The artist Kura Shomali was born in 1979. He studied at the Fine Arts Academy in Kinshasa before attending the École Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Strasbourg. He creates videos, installation art and even makes puppets which he animates to denounce the endemic corruption in the Democratic Republic of Congo. He focuses on drawing.

His drawings feature colourful characters who are shown in a cynical and humorous way. He creates frantically to filter out the turbulent chaos of his city : Kinshasa. He reinterprets and ridicules photos taken by well-known photographers including Samuel Fosso, Sammy Baloji, Malick Sidibé and Depara.

Applying gouache, ink, felt, charcoal and collages to drawing paper, Kura Shomali creates rich and unusual textures which are easily recognisable as his work.
