Presentation

André Lundquist was born in Copenhagen in 1972, where he received his initial training from the painter Thérèse Dragshøj (1909-1998). Graphic studies under the tutelage of Peter Martensen (represented at the Danish Gallery in Paris) have clearly left their mark in the artist's technique and explain his penchant for creating tensions between the characters he depicts and the surface of the canvas. on which they are painted. In 1999, winner of a grant from the Beckett Foundation, he stayed in the south of Spain at the Fondacion Valparaiso, in search of new inspiration. From this trip like many stays in the south of France, he keeps sensations that he translates into light and color. For those who decide to enter the world of his painting, Lundquist promises emotion. His figurative painting is sensual and timeless. Grace, lightness, tranquility… are other words to describe André Lundquist's painting. There is in his works a silent poetry which allows the viewer to enter each of them serenely, without fear. This is a real tour de force, because for the most part, the women that the painter sketches and then to whom he brings to life on the canvas, are presented in their privacy. They are seated, standing, lying down, kneeling… And yet, the painter's gesture never emerges any voyeurism. These women are like stops on images which let dawn under the pigments of their skin, behind the iris of their eyes, a longer, more complex story ... Visual metaphors, they are sometimes the mirror of our own experiences, sometimes a door to open, behind which the viewer can give free rein to his imagination. In each of his women there are a thousand stories, a thousand situations to appropriate or not. Lundquist mixes oil paint, ink, charcoal, pencil, wallpaper. His superimpositions, which give all their originality to his works, enabled him to be recently distinguished by the jury of the Taylor Foundation which awarded him a prize *, on the occasion of his participation in the Salon du Dessin et de la Peinture in Water at the Grand Palais in Paris. His palimpsests in sometimes pastel, sometimes bright colors, are the creations of a fine colourist whose lineage dates back to the end of the 19th / early 20th century. His fascination with masters such as Gauguin, Schiele, Modigliani, Munch and Willumsen or even Hélène Schjerfbeck is undeniable, but his art is constantly evolving. Today, some of his contemporaries also inspire him. H. Craig Hanna, Cathrine Raben Davidsen and Francoise de Felice. In addition to the l'Oeil du Prince gallery, André Lundquist is represented by several galleries. In Copenhagen (Galleri Knud Grothe), Roskilde (Galleri LABR) and Århus (Galleri V58) for Danish galleries as well as in Norway (Galleri Nobel), the Netherlands (European Art Makers). It is also present in several private collections in Paris, New York, Salamanca, Barcelona, London and Geneva. Lawrence Ebelle © 2014
