Presentation

Born in 1968, Diana Valarezo is a multidisciplinary artist from Ecuador. Since 2015, she has been living and working in Brussels.

The artist uses several mediums and techniques, ranging from painting to photography, engraving to performance. This multidisciplinary training accompanies her reflection on the world and her passion for traveling. She is inspired by this so as to renew her art and approach with shapes and colors. She absorbs foreign cultures to create new reflections, which she then displays in her work.
For her "Conscience imaginée" series on the theme of “otherness”, she studies representations of others in America during the 16th and 18th Century, also the Chinese and Senegalese culture. She creates mysterious and symbolic work where strange hybrid creatures are brought to life.

The theme of little monsters has followed her all the way to Brussels, where this time the artist was inspired by the medieval images, antique cartography, and illustrations of the artist Guaman Poma de Ayala and paintings of Jérôme Bosch.

Through her work, Valarezo portrays a new way of looking at things and intertwining cultures.
