Born in 1971 - France
Sophie Martin is an animal sculptor born in 1971 in St Germain en Laye. She obtained an artistic high school degree and then studied History of art at the School of Louvre. Her uncle and her aunt were veterinarians and have transmit to her their passion for animals. It was in their clinic that she found her first models and decided to dedicate to animal sculpting when she was 22 years old.
Sophie Martin works with clay, and focuses on the animal kingdom in general. She refuses to humanize the animals that she sculpts, to transcribe the biodiversity in its totality, without a filter. The beast is like fixed with an specific attitude, still interacting with its natural environment.
Contrary to fine arts and nudes, the animals do not pose: you have to grasp the movement, the gestures and the attitude in a fraction of a second, and it is this challenge that the artist likes so much.
Sophie Martin work with clay, with a ceramic oven. For specific subject exhibitions, she sometimes does her achievements in bronze.
Shopie Martin did her first vernissage in 1994, which she dedicated to horses. Afterwards, she participated in numerous group and solo exhibitions.
