Fawzi Brachemi

Born in 1949 in Oran (Algeria), he has lived and worked in France since 1990. His artistic career bears witness to his appetite for art in its multiple forms. After a stint at the School of Fine Arts in Oran, he opted for an architecture school in Paris. Self-taught painter, he has always painted and drawn. His first drawings were published in the Algerian press when he was only sixteen. First a graphic designer, illustrator and cartoonist, cartoonist, in recent years, he has devoted himself exclusively to his first passion, painting. “Fawzi Brachemi is a painter of women. However, his subject is above all painting itself and the encounter in his works of a body and a face is coupled with the intertwining of the history of art. In his paintings imbued with oriental calligraphy, the shapes follow decorative arabesques to the point of extreme abstraction, the colors often live flat like Pop-art orders the painting without erasing the drawing. A man's life is rich in its history, as can the painting of Fawzi Brachemi. His brushes on his canvases are so many traces of his history, intermingled and nourished with the development of his painting. Its journey through history is like so many steps that rise to the level of universality, to the essential questions of the mystery of being in the world. For Fawzi Brachemi, shapes and colors have as many requirements and necessities as a grammar eager for precise words. He redraws space, traces routes to explore it, composes skilful geometries, invents an alphabet of colors, seeks to master the line so that it plays at best like a violin string. His nude paintings invite us to dream, to travel on a body that has become landscape and pure geometry. Today he paints faces with wide open eyes which look at us as we look at them, which question our gaze and, as if by telepathy, give us impressions where the arrangement of shapes and colors expresses a deep humanity ”.
