Juliette Schwartz

Juliette Schwartz was born in 1978 in Buenos Aires, where she excelled in her studies at the Buenos Aires Film School and the Scenography School. With two degrees in her pocket, she moved to Paris in 1999 and immediately began a career creating painted film sets. In between two films, she took drawing, painting and engraving classes at the Ateliers des Beaux Arts in Paris.

While working in film, she also continues her painting career, using the powerful contrast of colours to explore ways to touch space and time. Her work is on the boundary between abstract and figurative art. Her paintings form part of private collections in Europe, Argentina and the US.

Juliette Schwartz’s canvasses take us into silent spaces with an intriguing feel and saturated colours. What is this place, if it indeed exists, where colours are drawn across a tightrope, the boundary between abstract and figurative art? Having previously worked in the world of cinematographic scenography, Juliette Schwartz explores perpetually changing spaces on her canvasses, betraying the pull of underlying forces: life, death, expectation, the process of change and renewal.

This imminent lurching provides the struggle of latent forms with energy and direction in an explosion of force and vitality, plunging us into a world of intense images and decisive contrasts. In this fluctuating space, forms strive to relinquish the moment in order to become timeless; to tame space and light when faced with the impossibility of taming time.

Natural or artificial, static or flickering, a representation of light guides the eye, which, as it is being led, becomes a “vital contemplation” of vibrations in space. Expectation is contemplation. And memory is born of this absence.
