Presentation

Jérôme Pourcel graduated in plastic expressions from the fine arts of Rouen (1998). For several years, he has been working on the theme of the portrait. This choice was naturally imposed in his career, especially with the search for neutrality in the treatment. He thus stands out from the portrait painter's usual approach, consisting in expressing the character, even the emotional universe of the person represented (or his own). He, on the contrary, wishes to subtract this emotional aspect from the representation. What is left then? It is up to the spectator to say it: the mental, even spiritual dimension of being? The performance itself? And if we still remove the hyperrealism, the precision of the line? If the representation becomes raster, pixels, grid? The artist develops this experience through different works ranging from embroidery to cross stitch to coloring by numbers or drawing to reveal. As the represented disappears from the representation, he explores more conceptual avenues of research.
