Presentation

Tania Mouraud
Born in 1942, this major figure of the French contemporary art scene now lives in Paris after extended stays in India and the USA. In 1968, she decided to burn the entirety of her paintings and began to create her first Initiation Rooms; immaculate spaces designed for introspection. Advocating “the artist’s responsibility towards history” – her parents were both involved in the French Resistance – and spectator awareness, she works using a variety of media: sound performance, in situ art, photography and since 2000, video.

The installation Ad Nauseam, presented at the MAC/VAL in 2014, filmed the concentration camp-like universe of a book-recycling factory. Her well-known Wall Drawings (stretched black lettering) were shown as part of a retrospective exhibition at the Pompidou Centre in Metz in 2015. Her work is present in both French and international collections (Museum of Modern Art, Paris, Pompidou Centre, FRAC and the MAMCO in Geneva).
