Biography
Irisa Della Roca is a French artist, born in 1985. Currently, she lives and works between France and Brazil. She did her studies in history and then got trained in photography at the IRIS center, and also received training as an educator, specialized in working with troubled teenagers in prisons. She worked for various NGO's, like Amnesty International, before becoming an international photograph assistant and joining Studio Rouchon as set assistant in 2011. Since 2009, she has been spending a part of her year in shantytowns of Rio, where she carries out projects with children like « Puisque le roi n’est pas humble, que l’humble soit roi!», a project that she's been handling simultaneously with another one in Clichy-sous-Bois, where she works as an educator. The starting point of this photo series, is the question that Della Roca asks children who are aged between 6 and 15 in the shantytowns of Rio and the suburbs of Clichy: "How do you want yourself to be seen? ". An avalanche of kings, princesses, movie stars parade around in front of her lens. The artist captures them as the years go by, portraying their evolution and dreams. The underlying idea being: not to belittle these people and their lives but address the question of identity. Iris Della Roca has exhibited her « Puisque le roi n’est pas humble, que l’humble soit roi !» series many times in Paris and London, (Little Black Gallery, 2015), as well as «God’s creatures» a series on transsexual prostitutes of Rio- in London in 2014 and in Paris (Maëlle Galerie, 2015).
