Presentation

After graduating from a Parisian design school, Cube landed in Reunion in 2013 and got noticed the following year by participating in the second edition of Pimp my deck. In the middle of Jace and Gorg One (to name a few), Cube presents what will be the first work of a new series made entirely of vinyl letters pre-cut and laid one by one by hand.

From this collective exhibition comes a collection of clothes edited by Untoy, alongside Mégot as well as Kid Kréole and Boogie.

He continues to be present at the following editions of Pimp my deck and is discovered by the general public during the Electropicales 2014 and during the design month at the city of the arts in September 2016, then during various exhibitions through the galleries of the 'Isle. The first article presenting it in the street art press was signed Paris tonkar in 2018.

It was also in 2018 that he exhibited in Paris twice.

A lover of typography and seeking to add new material and additional semantics to his works, Cube very early on integrated texts into his paintings by juxtaposing quotes on corresponding screen-printed portraits. Little by little, the texts fell apart to be an integral part of the portrait itself and to constitute the mastered imperfections that make up the interest of a portrait.

It is therefore the logical outcome of his work to arrive today at creating portraits whose raw material is entirely composed of letters. The texts are then disarticulated and reassembled to reveal a graphic meaning and no longer a linguistic meaning, in the overall aspect of the face but also in the detail of the compositions. The curves of the letters intersect in a perfectly controlled manner. If the form of the texts is only slightly modified, the background presents a singularly new approach and a particularly innovative semantics. The choice of the Times font, classic and elegant, contrasts with the often atypical and tortured portraits. The letter is the basis of our written communication and characterizes us as a civilized being, it takes on even more importance here by becoming an integral part of ourselves. The artist reflects on the importance of writing and its various uses.
