José Antonio Zaragoza made his formation in the National School of Fine Arts in Paris. After that, he started to work at painter Igor Bitman’s workshop. In 1998, was member at Casa de Velázquez in Madrid. He also obtained several awards like Edouard-Marcel Sandoz award in Taylor Foundation, André et Berthe Noufflard award and a silver medal -painting section- in France. Currently, he is the Director of the Municipal School of Parla, Madrid.
José Antonio Zaragoza is an artist who paints people in their social and colective context. Mostly, he uses oil on canvas for his compositions in different formats.
What we find in his work are suggestive collages with intriguing narrative structures, showing us both oneiric compositions and historical, social evolution of society towards contemporaneity. However, references to cinema, literature, painting or history come together in a wide variety of scenes showing a changing world, in some ways contradictory.
Regarding the composition of these works, it can be appreciated some different influences. On the one hand, we could see Hieronymous Bosch’s creations in the strenght of the characters along the narratives. On the other hand, the indefinition of spaces remind us of the metaphysical constructions of Giorgio De Chirico. What is more, Dalí’s figures could have left a mark in the creation and composition of Zaragoza’s works as well.
In general terms, Zaragoza’s compositions show us what we may define as a post-apocalyptic world, where time and space extend unifying in just one moment past and future events.
