Born in 1971 - France
Anne Lemaitre was born in Le Havre in 1971.
She entered the world of creation through drawing. From the age of 14, she admired the columns of Leonardo da Vinci and engravings of Albrecht Dürer...In a 4th grade history textbook, she discovered the "L’oeil du silence" a painting by Max Ernst which had a deep impact on her. An anthropologist at heart, she went on with her studies and had a conventional career. In 2005, she decided to devote herself to her passion. She attended evening classes at Ateliers des Beaux-Arts in Paris and regularly went to the Cabinet des Arts Graphiques at Musée du Louvre. In 2008 she made her first drawings with a black, blue and red pen. She was encouraged by the painter Gérard Garouste and writer Michel Houellebecq in 2010.
"Man is a mystery. We need to get through" (Dostoevsky). Her work attempts to probe the intricacy of the human soul: dive into its depths, search for the multiple facets. Her work influenced through our reality and mythologies. She feeds on journeys, "primitive" art and the surreal, medieval works, poetry readings, both philosophical and anthropological. Her work is derived from a conscious dream and an exhilarating picture-poetry. The aesthetic aspect is like a quest for a world"in itself", between the primitive and the refined, instinctive and traditional, enthusiasm and rigor, harshness and tenderness.
