Etienne Cail

Born in: 1991

Etienne Cail decided to become a painter in the Atelier de Sèvres. In 2009, at the age of 18, he had already found his own style, which is a very rare thing for an artist. After depicting his studio from all possible angles, Etienne Cail started to paint his "heads", portraits of some kind of opponents that he defies with rough strokes of his brush. In 2011, he has a revelation when he discovers the work of Shi Xinning and Zhang Haiying. He admires the contemporary Chinese art and the painter takes his first trip to China. He visits Shanghai, the artistic capital and then Songzhuang, the artistic village of Yue Minjunand but also of Zhang Haiying, his idol, who is his host and introduces him to the artistic elite. In the studios of Chinese artists he discovers this powerful and subtle art. Here, the rebels of the art world are not dissidents in the strict sense of the term, but they fight for the independence of creation in a country where freedom is restricted. This ability to create powerful art despite these constraints provoke the admiration of the young painter who starts to judge the old artistic provocations as being too light. When he goes back to France, the creation of a new series of portraits supports this fresh maturity and a new project comes to life: if all the great moments in history and the most important masterpieces were to materialize through the eye of Asian artists, what is the face that should come after that of Louis XIV and what would be the atmosphere in "The Luncheon on the Grass"? This young painter is an artist to follow the next years.
