Jacques Pelissier

Born in: 1967

France

Biography
Jacques Pelissier is a French painter born in 1967. He decided to become an artist at the age of sixteen, when he came across a brochure that was praising the courses at Ecole Supérieure d’Art Graphique, the kind of college that Nice didn't have but he secretly dreamed about. His engineer father and chemist mother encouraged him and got him settled in Paris. Jacques Pelissier was fascinated by the world of illustration and creation of posters, but right from his second year in college, he realized the constraints involved in this field. He didn't want to choose a particular theme, an order book or a boss...Therefore he decided to paint and nothing else. After his graduation, he came back to Nice and set up a workshop at his parent's home. He didn't have a teacher but just the painters he admired like Van Gogh, Robert Ryman, Philip Guston… His research focused on material. He bought canvases, colors and tried oil painting and pastels, varied his mediums like paper, newspaper, cardboard, wood...No figuration, no model, just material and a medium to paint on. For four full years, he worked without showing anything, didn't rub shoulders with artists, or go to a school, but just absorbed books of painters he admired. He discovered that Jasper Johns worked with wax, therefore he mixed beeswax and pastel oil to make up a material, but this time he interspersed a few representations, objects of mundane life, a brioche, faces, beautiful women of Fayoum. He traveled through space and time along with artists he admired, Nice and Ariege from his childhood were enough to do this. He didn't feel the need to move and explore the world that Picasso, Basquiat, Bacon, writers Beckett, Faulkner conjured up. In 1997, he felt ready. The Lola Gassin gallery came to see his workshop and immediately offered him a personal exhibition. He was shocked when he saw his paintings hung on the wall. For the first time, he was able to take a step back from his work. On a rich surface, is a result of of savant chemistry of wax and pastel oils heated with an iron, along with gray schemes. The artist inscribes a few patterns, resulting in a chaotic figuration...After all, figuration doesn't matter, he meets people and feels comfortable. He has found what he was looking for.
