Geneviève Gleize

Geneviève Gleize has been pursuing, since her studies at the Beaux-Arts in Épinal, a photographic work that takes place in abandoned spaces. She surprises them in their privacy, does not construct any staging and lets the elements reveal themselves, in their natural light. To photograph, for the most part, is to capture the present, to freeze it, to then restore it as it is. Events, people, places are imprinted on the clichés, inanimate but faithful to the moment they were taken. Like the painter in Marcel Carné's film, Quai des brumes, who said: “I paint the things hidden behind things…”, Geneviève Gleize photographs the lives that have disappeared behind the traces, the dust, the ephemeral shadows. The cliché then becomes a revealer of lives, of activities that have vanished in the passage of time. The details thus captured are no longer ordinary realities but become shards of the past, the murmur of voices that have fallen silent; in this fragile, undefined space, everyone's imagination can find their own references.
