Robert Schwarz is a nude photographer, born in 1950, he lives and works in Brussels.
He is known due to his photo series « Nu visitant une exposition » and « Nu visitant l’atelier », in reference to a famous painting of Marcel Duchamp, dated 1912 « Nu descendant un escalier ».
Schwarz depicts naked women in his photos, while observing famous work, which are themselves naked representations in a mise en abyme sort of way, and tries to establish dialogue between the naked academics and their observations which have been stripped down.
According to the artist, naked doesn't rhyme with end but is a means of mise en abyme, an ontological question and reflection on the status of the painting, photo, museum as an institution and the spectator's perception. He transgresses not through the nakedness within him, frequently represented through the ages, nor by bringing the nude out of the frame as did the sculptors but by making the bourgeois audience confront their voyeuristic fantasies.
