Presentation

Geneviève Asse is a painter born in 1923 in Vannes, Brittany. She currently lives and works between Paris and the Gulf of Morbihan.

Her inclination to painting was nourished by the work of Sonia Delaunay, whom she discovered in 1937. In 1940, she joined the National School of Decorative Arts.

The artist's name became synonymous of the color blue and became inseparable. Genevière Asse has a strong passion for this shade which she uses relentlessly. For her it gives an idea of plenitude and infinite. Like a unique child, the color blue prevails in all her canvases.

This color give us an idea of the horizon, of distant lands, offering us a source of contemplation and silence. But among this blue world, the structure of her canvases lies in the architecture and composition. It is thanks to her simple and sensible shapes that she reaches consistency.

With a blue, white or red line, Geneviève Asse splits her work in two. A fissure that evokes a gap, an opening in a closed space letting out a beam of light. This mark, horizontal or vertical is more a mark of separation than of a fusion, it resembles a scar.

In her blue abstractions, Geneviève Asse creates a landscape and a whole history. Her work is recognized and is present all around the world. She was beneficiated from a retrospective at the Pompidou Center in 2013 as well as at the Museum of Fine Arts of Lyon in 2015.
