Presentation

Julien Duquennoy went to an architecture school, but gave up mastery of art and opted for an art which according to him gives "free rein" for painting.

His portraits are tinted with iconoclastic influences, Francis Bacon, Philippe Pasqua, Françoise Neilly, Jenny Salville…The outcome is expressionist pop, bordering figuration and abstraction. "I contemplate, then I splash", confesses the artist. His figures are daubed, smeared and painted with bright colors. Faces of women, old people, children, animals vibrate and even bloom through the fusion of expressive strokes. The painter confirms "scratching", in order to merge a face, a life, a vibration. "My painting is like a metaphor of life, if one looks closely it's violent and muddled up...but if one steps back, it's beautiful and gentle". The portrait fixes turbulence between benevolence, ebullience and violence.

The artist is alert when it comes to people around him, so that he can later analyze and dissect them, not to mention transform them with the help of his brush. His strokes besmirch classic codes, namely balance and harmony. His faces shake up the academic beauty. The spectator is thrown off balance, the face is mangled while emotions are eradicated.
