Anne Moreau

On large white areas, I painted fish. Then there were the reds and the checkerboards. There was the earth, I mean the ochres marked with a triangle, covered by the “great floods”, the “water birds” with the arch filigree So Anne Moreau talks about her itinerary. His life and his painting are linked to it. Water represents the privileged environment. It is both an existential choice and an artistic adventure. Anne Moreau lived on the Île de Ré for a long time, then in a barge, before “mooring” her workshop near a Champagne lock. But his painting is not narrowly referential. The fish which sometimes emerge from the signs, blue waves, traces of writing, the birds deployed on colored surfaces of earth, the arches of bridges, refer to everyday life as much as to a broad symbolism. The singularity of this work derives, I believe, from this tension established for a long time by the artist and a reality experienced in a body marked by desire and the surface of the canvas where forms are imposed. Neither realist nor symbolist, this art is based on constant movement, it generates a space of vibrations which opens the gaze to its own incompleteness: it cannot be fixed in an image of the world. The eye constantly oscillates between the water and the sky, the perceived reality and the living presences of memory.
