Born in 1946 - France
Born in 1946 in Cannes, Max Charvolen was a member of the group INterVENTION (1968-1973) and, afterwards, took part in the activities of the École de Nice.
He was also a co-founder of the group 70 (1970), he studied art and architecture, and has worked for Oscar Niemeyer, in Rio.
"His work has three main directions: the elements of the painting, the space, the representation. To his works from the '60s and '70s concentrating on the canvas and its various modifications through cuts, folds, sewing, colorations and using the format of the painting as a model, are added, after 1979, his works based on constructions and objects.
After this point, he cuts the canvas into piece and then recomposes it on objects or built spaces that he folds flat. Color becomes a means to differentiate and highlight the elements of the work: the process, the volume, the perimeter, its limits and edges. A part of his work is centered around the variations of the possible projections of a volume with the help of calculations and digital drawing.
Jean Petitot has analyzed his practice, qalifying it as a reversal of conventional perspective: while painting was seeking to give, in two dimensions, the illusion of depth, Max Charvolen shows, in scale 1, in the reality of the two dimensions, the memory of the three dimensions. In doing so, he "deals with representation without going through figuration" and gives new formats and new reasons to our symbolic spaces."
