Nicolas Leroy

Nicolas Leroy spent his childhood in the wild and tropical landscapes of Reunion Island. After 4 years at the Beaux-Arts in Metz and an Erasmus in Germany, he landed in Brussels and joined the Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels in the studio of Chantal Maes. The art of photography becomes obvious to him during a trip to Prague and the acquisition of a camera resembling the Lomo Lubitel. Amazed by the magical rendering of the image through the frosted surface, he finds his leitmotif: the material in photography. For this artist, what matters is the spectator's experience in front of the image, the spatial field it offers, its luminosity and transparency. The image is the result of a reflection on man, his environment and his environment. These views of the natural element are reminiscent of the German Romantics and the place of nature beautiful and dangerous at the same time. “Hope makes people laugh” is the serigraphic interpretation of the photo “Eaux-de-mer” by Nicolas Leroy. The artist worked with the serigraph with the desire to be as faithful as possible to the image. The importance of the movement of the sea is perfectly captured in the still image. The spectator is faced with a mass of water, a representation of the eternity and the littleness of man facing the universe. These views of the natural element are reminiscent of the German romantics and their sublimation of the natural element.
