The Cologne artist miegL develops pictorial worlds with different materials, new techniques and relief-like constructions, which are characterized by their deep and contrasting colors. A side-by-side, under-and-over surfaces and shapes make up a whole. Traces of the lower layers remain partially visible and prove the presence of the seemingly invisible. An indication of existence, of past existence, of life and the transient.

Thematically, the artist focuses on the human, historical events and civilization. Figures grow out of his informal-seeming structures that remain autonomous, yet radiate a strong narrative character. In most cases, the figures appear in groups and de-monster affiliation. Static juxtaposition of persons stands in contrast of flowing image structures. miegL presents forms that are based on the memories of the recipient. He focuses on details, zooming in on motives and presenting them separately to the viewer.

At the heart of the artist's analysis are the materials and the various crafting processes that result from them. In studies of old techniques and artistic methods, he discovered new possibilities that he gains for his painting. He paints on wood and aluminum, combining plaster, oil and acrylic paints with varnishes. Fiberglass serves as a transparent background, and this material is particularly versatile in its archaic-looking sculptures.

Grinding, painting, scratching and lubricating are just as much a part of the miegl's work as the application of colors and shapes. This results in different effects of the material: rough stands next to smooth, porous next to soft. miegL's pictures, however, always seem natural and earth-bound in their appearance. As in the painting "Auschwitz", he is also fascinated by other non-art products such as coffee powder, which he applies in the form of a post to the picture surface.

On the one hand, it is modern and art-foreign materials that the artist uses, on the other hand, he always returns to the traditional style of painting and drawing. Through the synthesis of the image genres 'painting', 'relief' and 'graphics' the artist creates a realistic abstract landscape that underpins the sensuality of his themes.

miegL as an artist of his time seeks his stylistic devices and specifies means of expression. He moves between abstraction and figurative painting, leaving the enlightened and independent observer sufficient freedom to fantasize. The paintings and sculptures miegLs win by their simplicity.

miegL lives and works since 1988 as a freelance artist in Cologne. His work includes the fields of sculpture, painting, interdisciplinary projects as well as stage conceptions and set designers for contemporary dance.
