Wolf Thiele

Wolf Thiele, of German origin, is an artist-painter and a sculptor who lives and works in Gattières (Côte d'Azur), Monaco and also in Hamburg. After obtaining university degrees in engineering and computer science, he followed an artistic training. It is this double aspect that is expressed in his current work in painting and sculpture, which he produces using digital technology and photography. Wolf Thiele's works are on the one hand rigorously geometric and minimalist but on the other hand poetic and contemplative. His painting can be related either to the geometric constructivist current, or to minimalist art. He experiments with the effects of colors, shapes, lines, surfaces in their interaction and explores the subjectivity of visual perception. As a rule, it starts from simple geometric shapes. He likes the formal rigor and the stripping back of geometry, thus agreeing with Paul Klee's assertion: „Nature can afford waste, the artist must be economical.“ Analysis, reduction and variation are important principles in Thiele's work. This is why digital means are appropriate for the realization of his sketches, paintings and sculptures. Thanks to its simple combination possibilities, the computer allows for systematic visual research, helping the painter and sculptor to free himself from traditional working methods. It results in combinations of shapes and colors that cannot be found in nature or even in a museum: the computer contributes to making paintings and sculptures of a new character. The paintings “painted” on the screen are produced using mathematical algorithms. They are then printed on a traditional canvas using a nine-color printer, then mounted on a wooden frame.
