Biography

Bernd Alternstein is a German sculptor born April 29, 1943 in Dobrovolsk. Altenstein studied from 1964 to 1969 at the Academy of Fine Arts of Stuttgart in the class of Rudolf Daudert. From 1970 to 1975, he attended the Technical University Carolo-Wilhelmina in Brunswick de Jurgen Weber. From 1975 to 2009, he worked as a teacher at the University of Arts of Breme.

For him, the charm of being a sculptor lies in the alliance between the intellectual and the manual, from the visualisation to the materialization. Individual and social developments are priority subjects for him, he likes placing his sculptures in the middle of the city. According to him, the architectural reflection found in the construction and in the decomposition of plastic volumes is also essential for public debate. He does not see his sculptures as mere ornaments but as optimal bases of reflectiion, catalysts for reasoning.

With Walderman Otto, he invented figurative sculpture in Bremen. Like fixed in action, the characters created by Bernd Altenstein, resemble the citizens of our society, simple and warm. They are represented in their daily life: sitting on a table, working, cleaning or having a drink with friends.
