Gerhard Doehler

Born in 1953 - Germany

Gerhard Doehler was born in 1953 in Karlsruhe (Germany). He lives and works in the south of France.

When we enter a space occupied by the artwork of Gerhard Doehler, we are surprised at first by the lightness, the luminosity and the colorful vibrations of the art pieces and of the space. The supports he uses are diverse, but their shapes are very simple: lines, squares, and especially circles.

These forms do not evoke anything in particular by themselves, they do not refer to any object, to any function, which would help us identify them or even compare us to anything. They affirm their presence by the evidence of their state and constitute a sort of archetypal models, and seem to be there only as support for color and light.

The colors are reduced to a few strokes, on surfaces that are quite reduced finally, and sometimes, at first, they cannot be seen even if we perceive them. To create these vibrations induced by color and light which emanate from his circles, the artist's work involves a disciplined execution.

The acrylic paint is applied with a pistol, and the successive layers of varnish are sanded. These repeated operations allow to give color, its reflections and shadows a great intensity. The passage to aluminum supports allowed the strengthening of these vibrations too.
