Presentation

Wolfgang Aichner is a German artist born in 1965. He got a degree in Fine arts from the University of East London. Among other awards, he received a grant from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation, in New York, and taught at three universities. Besides developing his individual work, in 2005 he founded the partnership GAEG with artist thomas Huber who was based in Munich. After their project "Passage2011" for the 54th Venise Biennial, they worked mainly with curator Christian Schoen.

To create his pieces, Wolfgang Aichner searches photographs and then carefully reproduces them with acrylic paint on a canvas through a metal grill. The new colorless background allows the viewer to imagine an scene falsely pixelated in his personal context. The purpose of this technique is to mislead the viewer by giving him the impression of observing a photograph of bad quality, only by looking closer, he realizes that it is actually a painting and he will then be conscious of his conditioning. The purpose of such a method is to make the viewer think about the overflow of digital images in today's society. The artist denounces the consequences of a change in the perception of the reality of life caused by a digital revolution during the last years.
