ARMANDO MARROCCO

Galatina (Le) 1939

After the initial informal interests, in 1959 he meets Lucio Fontana, who encourages him to move to Milan. It happened in 1962. His first researches develop in the field of Programmatic and Kinetic Art.
The first personal exhibition is in Lecce at Spazio Andretta, whereas the first in Milan is in 1966 at Galleria Montenapoleone. In 1967 he enters the XI Premio Silvestro Lega of Modigliana (second prize ex-aequo with Mario Nigro).

In 1969 he joins the Art Terminal group, with which he attends some important events, such as Area Condizionata at Galleria Toselli in Milan and at Campo Urbano in Como, by Luciano Caramel. In 1970 Pierre Restany invites him to join the events held in Milan for the X anniversary of Nouveau Realisme birth.

At the beginning of ‘70s, his interests include behavior, nature and anthropology, and this fact will lead him to join the Genetic Art movement. To note, this is the exhibition of Habitat for ants - 2000 living ants, held in Milan at Galleria Apolllinaire of Guido Le Noci. These experiences will be collected in the publication Calendario, filled with texts by Pierre Restany and Toti Carpentieri.

After a series of international exhibitions organized by Restany himself on the theme of communication and in the field of New Writing, in the 80s his initial interest for material recovery becomes increasingly more vivid, like the interest addressed to space and environmental installation.

In 1988, by Pierre Restany’s invitation, one of his sculptures, La città palafitta, is installed in the Olympic Park in Seoul. In 2002 he is nominated Academic ad honorem of Pontificia Insigne Accademia di Belle Arti dei Virtuosi al Pantheon.

In 2007 he receives a tribute for Fifty years old art, Armando Marrocco Artecontemporanea, at Palazzo della Permanente in Milan and in 2008 at Palazzo della Loggia in Brescia.

In 2010 he joins the Biennial of Venice-Architecture with Pietra and Messaggio.

In 2012 the Italian Cultural Institute of Colonia dedicates to him an important exhibition, “Armando Marrocco - Io sono sempre io”.

In March 2012 he inaugurates, at Galleria Antonio Battaglia of Milan, “Intrecci”, whose exhibition catalogue is edited by Alberto Fiz.

In 2014, in Milan, he presents “Mediterranei, Intrecci, Dimore” at Galleria Il Castello, “Néspazionétempo” at Galleria Formaquattro of Bari and “Sognoutopiairrealtà” at Galleria L’Osanna of Nardò.
