Presentation

Shoichi Tsurukawa was born in Tokyo in 1984.

He mainly uses the staining technique called "Tsutsu Gaki" to create his artworks. « Tsutsu » means « tube » and « kaku », « drawing ».

This technique is a process that involves complicated procedures. With the help of a conical shaped tube, a sort of paste is applied on the material, depending on the desired designs. The fabric is painted. Only the areas covered in paste will not be painted. Once the fabric is dried, the paste is removed with the help of steam. Shoichi Tsurukawa uses different colors and his artworks include many details. It takes a very long time; with the process he uses, to finish a piece.

He considers his artworks as his dreams, crushed to pieces by the brutal reality. "There is often a huge difference between my own expectations and the reality", he says. He experienced such thoughts as “It is not supposed to be like this”, or “it should have gone that way”.

His work tries to visually represent such a resentment, regret and bitterness.
