Matthew Attard was born in Malta in 1987. He graduated from the University of Malta and attended La Valletta school of Arts. He lives and works in Venice.
In 2011 he won a one-year artistic residency in Forte Marghera, from the organization called Eventi Arte Venezia. He had shows in Forte Marghera and Galleria A+A in Venice, in the Barbican Centre in London and at the Water Cube in Peking. In 2013 he had exhibits in Galleria Michela Rizzo, Venezia.
Matthew Attard produces artworks following a recent interest in the “physical” deconstruction and the “cerebral” reconstruction of an image. His intent is primarily to expand and explore the analysis of visual perception, starting from the notion that the image is the result of the brain.
Father of neuroesthetics, Professor Semir Zeki, states that “artists erase reality to a greater or lesser extent, and substitute their own reality - created by their brains, instead.” Taking into consideration his research, Attard explores our perceptive possibilities using related studies such as aesthetics, neurobiology and neuroesthetics, for the understanding and the testing of cognitive mechanisms of reality, the brain and ultimately our visual beings.
