Gurtubay is born in Mexico in 1956 and is the son of an Uruguayan mother and Spanish father, which allows him to have an important cultural diversity from a very young age.

He is a professor at the Universidad de la Salle and is the winner of the Slim prize among 250 contestants, selected to participate only by invitation, to make a sculpture of 6 meters high in the Slim Building.

He is one of the most prominent artists in Latin American contemporary art.

His works are inspired by his daughter and his cat and never produce series. All his pieces are unique.
