Presentation

Willy van der Smam is a potter and painter.

What is her style?

Willy often paints figures that incorporate the background into the figures in the foreground. For a long time, the background was reminisce of a watercolour background, with different colours flowing through each other. This created a mystical background, for hands, dogs, mystical figures to appear from. You can see the sharp lines from her pottery work shine through in her paintings. The background playing as an important role as the lines that capture the figure in the foreground. Willy is looking for a technical challenges and therefore like to use different materials and try to apply different techniques. Despite the change in technique and material the interplay between the background and the foreground figures is a red line in her oeuvre.

What is your qualifications

Willy has worked in various creative fields for a number of years, and decided to apply to night school for drawing and art history. In the beginning, she have been taught by different teachers and followed a few workshops. At the Free Academy Vlietstreek in Leidschendam, I started taking classes at Willem Kerklaan. After a few years, I was looking for a new challenge and I came across Lennie de Boer, watercolorist and teacher at the Free Academy in Zoetermeer. After that she enrolled in a master class at BplusC under the direction of Guus Zuiderwijk to gain more experience with acrylic painting. She is currently participating in Vrij Atelier by Hélène Doornebal.
