Jean-Marc Calvet

Jean-Marc Calvet's experience is rather unique. Originally from Nice, a bodyguard, he left France and moved to Miami and became a white-collar criminal. He fled Central America and began painting at the age of 38. This discovery was a true emotional release, as it made him fight against his demons.

Calvet draws inspiration from his turbulent and doubtful past for his creations. His canvases are filled with goggled-beings, and make a major impact on the spectator. Dazzling colors hypnotize from far and the abundance of details from close, triggering fascination. His depictions remind us of Mayan masks, especially those worn during sacrificial rituals, made to pacify the Gods and initiate a new creation circle. The artist therefore portrays a deep reflection on death and renaissance, highlighting a quest for eternity.

The strength of Calvet's work is well-known. He has mainly presented his work at the Central America Biennial in Nicaragua. An unexpected event took place, Jean-Marc Calvet was subject to a documentary, directed by Dominic Allan and was nominated at the international film festival in Miami, Edinburgh and Montreal, to name a few.
