Stas Makarov was one of the original members of the 'New Academy of Art' in St Petersburg in the 1980s and 90s. This was a group of artists who rejected modernism and mined Russia's imperial and totalitarian past, sometimes ironically, as well as Hollywood movies, western advertising, kitsch and homoerotica for classical ideals of beauty.
Biography
Born 1972, Leningrad.
1989 – was one of the founders of the “Recnik' Club"(Klub Rechnikov) that united young poets, artists, musicians and designers.
1989-91 – attended classes of painting at Leningrad Free University (Svobodny Universtitet).
1992 – 1995 – student of New Academy of Fine Arts (created by Timur Novikov). Since
1995 – postgraduate of the above mentioned Academy, was member of its “research" group, under the guidance of D. Egelsky was trying to recreate forgotten “noble" techniques of photo print of the XIX' century.
Since 1996 – member of the “research Department' of the mentioned Academy. Belongs to the movement “New Serious" (“Novyie Serjosnye").
Stas Makarov' works are at the collection of State Russian Museum (Saint-Petersburg), Victoria and Albert Museum, London, Bornholms Kunstmuseum, Denmark and in private collections in Russia, UK, Finland, Germany, and Denmark.
