Mrdjan Bajic

Born in 1957 - Serbia

Mrdjan Bajic was born in 1957 in Belgrade, Serbia. He lives and works in Belgrade.

Chosen in 2007 to represent Serbia, in its first pavilion as an independent nation at the 52nd Venice Biennale, Mrdjan Bajic is among those artists whose work and identity are connected to the history of their country. His artistic responsibility speaks to his emotional attachment and intellectual engagement.

Mrdjan Bajic starts his work from a preparatory drawing in order to realize a model sculpture before creating a large drawing in which he assembles diverse elements and materials in the manner of a collage. His quest continues to one day create a monumental sculpture.

The familiar objects that he assembles in a sort of unstable equilibrium recall all the grand utopias like suspended hopes where they mix together to be at the same time tragic and comical.
