Jane Stravs

Born in 1965 - Slovenia

Jane Stravs is a Slovenian photographer, born in Ljubljana, in 1965. He is one of the main representatives of photography in Slovenian contemporary art.

His photographic approach is based on spontaneity and reflection, images comes alive and disappear in a second. The images of his photos seem to be taken right on the spot and during moments in the past, they tell a true story, accompanied by silence, a silence which is never tongue-tied. According to the artist, the sound of silence is an answer to the damaged image in a post-traumatic state, and this phenomenon can be seen in all his work.

The perception of architecture is related to security, it's a perception of space where one can take refuge, during earthquakes and bombings. Jane Stravs has a critical approach towards architecture, destroyed buildings which collapsed and whose identity represents power in a political, social and personal manner. The state of shock belongs to the past, the present can only feel the indifference and despair, when confronted with these demolitions.

Since his first exhibition in 1982, Jane Stravs has done more then 30 solo exhibitions and around 100 group exhibitions. His photos are part of several public and private collections. In 1993, the Modern Art Museum in Ljubljana presented a complete retrospective exhibition of his work.
