Mi-Hyun Kim

Born in 1962 - South Korea

Mi-Hyun Kim was born in Seoul in 1963. She moved to France in 1985 to study the semiology of cinema. In 1990 she produced her first short film and got her cinema degree from the Paris III University.

Mi-Hyun Kim discovers a new way of narrating her ideas through photography and after studying 2 years of photography at the Efet, she pursues her studies with Master's of Photographic Techniques at the University Paris VIII until 1995.

She joins the Métis agency in 1993 and takes part the same year in a photography project of the General Council of Seine Saint-Denis on the theme of Architecture. She produces her first polaroid prints transfered on watercolor paper. It is with great refinement that Mi-Hyun Kim develops her still lifes. Fruits, flowers, inanimate objects of our daily life have a poetic quality in her photographs.

Mi-Hyun Kim knows how to add a subtle aura of sweetness to things, suggesting a smell, tactile sensations, always seeking to engage us almost physically into her universe.

But the relevance of her approach to inanimate things also has en echo in the stories that she produces.

A couple seems seems to come straigh out of a novel; a lonely drunk appears to us as a refugee in the universe of the photographer. It's the strength of her photographs, as if their subjects decided to move inside the images theselves: it does not force the world to look, she just welcomes it with affection.
