Serge Brignoni

Switzerland  • 1903

Presentation

Painter and sculptor from Ticino, Serge Brignoni lived in Bern, Berlin and Paris coming in contact with the representatives of the major avant-garde art of that time. Thanks to the meeting with André Breton and Tristan Tzara, Brignoni abandoned cubist and expressionist trials and approached to Surrealism, sharing the poetic and artistic purposes. He was inspired by simple figurative languages of cultures, integrating the carving and the use of eclectic materials to become a firm believer of that primitivist poetic, in a personal quest for synthesis of simple volumes and elemental contents.

Through his artistic quest, Brignoni developed the theme of metamorphosis, fragments of plants and animals and experienced the techniques of lithography, collage, bas-relief and iron sculpture.

From his youth, his works have been included in major international surrealist exhibitions, such as in Switzerland, the great retrospective in 1997 at the Kunstmuseum Bern.
