Milton Gendel

With 72,000 negatives and 60 albums, Milton Gendel's collection covers more than 70 years of his life in Europe, Asia and America. Through his work, Milton Gendel has traveled a lot in Europe, always attentive to creation and the world of art. In the army and then by his profession as a reporter, he also covered historical and social subjects. Born in New York in 1918, art historian, Milton Gendel was Meyer Schapiro's assistant at Columbia University in New York in 1939 and 1940. From 1941, Milton Gendel frequented André Breton and the Surrealists who left it. Europe at war. After having worked for the "Camouflage Engineering Company" in 1942, Milton Gendel enlisted in the American army. He studies Chinese at Yale; in 1945 he was in service in Kunming and then assigned to the “historical section” in Shanghai. In Formosa (Taiwan) he participated in the capture of the Japanese Governor of the island, General Ando. Milton Gendel moved to Europe at the end of 1949. Among other things, he was correspondent for the New York magazine ARTnews, co-curator at the Venice Art Biennale for the United States Pavilion (1977), editor of History Illustrated from Italy (ed. Weidenfeld & Nicolson and Rizzoli) and from a 25-volume series on the great monuments of the world (ed. Newsweek and Mondadori). His collaboration as a consultant for culture and public relations with Adriano Olivetti, a committed patron of post-war Italy, began in 1951. Milton Gendel was also an editorial consultant for Alitalia. He is an honorary member of the American Academy in Rome, the city where he lives.
