Presentation

Born in 1972 in New York in the United States and now settled in Los Angeles, Dan Levenson did a diploma at the Royal College of Art in London in 1997. Since then, his works have been exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions around the world: White Columns, New York, NY; LAXART, Los Angeles, CA; Vox Populi, Philadelphia, PA; PARTICIPANT INC, New York, NY; EFA Gallery, New York, NY; Peloton, Sydney, Australia; and Of ceOps, Brooklyn, NY. The American artist has a trademark geometric style, somewhere between ultra-contemporary and reverence for the history of art.  His oils on canvas in particular follow a precise composition, filling the space with recurrent geometric patterns: rectangles, circles, squares, triangles and other simplistic linear designs…

In the past Levenson preferred monochrome creations in black and white with a dried, aged appearance, but today he favours a richer, brighter colour palette, and plays with superimposition onto a white background and creates geometric paintings. In 2018 the Praz-Delavallade gallery in Paris held an exhibition dedicated to Levenson, entitled 'SKZ Forms and Colour Studies'. The series of works they choose called to mind a hybrid blend of abstract artand the German school of Bauhaus.

As a painter, Dan Levenson's works form part of a fantastical wider story, and he has created a school of art which a group of Swiss artists are now a part of. The identity of these artists is not known, but Levenson has imagined a range of institutions based around this fictional community, including a philanthropic tobacco company, a desk manufacturer, and even the governmental institution 'Swiss Standards Organisation'. His creations have a global, conceptual theme, and have a tone to their abstraction that could almost be described as Dadaist.
