Jamel Shabazz is considered one of the most influential and important photographers of the late 20th century. Bar none, Jamel has represented urban New York’s visual history for over 30 years. Born in 1960 and raised on the tough streets of Red Hook, Brooklyn; Jamel’s father, a U.S. Navy photographer, would introduce photography to him at age 15. Jamel would later embark on a photographic exodus through New York’s concrete jungle and capture street life in its most purest and exhilarating form. His honest and unforgettable images are recognized the world over and paint the most vivid picture of early Hip-Hop fashion in New York. Called the Gordon Parks of his era, Jamel’s unique ability to capture the heart & soul of his subjects has made him one of the most revered photographers today. His unmistakable imagery has been called timeless and serves as a powerful tool towards education and empowerment.

Jamel’s highly sought after photographs have been acquired by such notables as singer Lenny Kravitz, comedian Dave Chappelle and President Bill Clinton, to name a few. His internationally celebrated monographs, Back In The Days, A Time Before Crack and Seconds Of My Life (powerHouse Books 2001, 2005 and 2007 respectively) all serve as “visual diaries” to an incomparable body of work that dates back to the mid-70’s. Jamel’s work has appeared in a number of media including, film, TV and publications such as: Interview, GQ, Vogue, Vibe, The New York Times, Playboy and French Photo.

He is currently celebrating the release of his new book, Represent : Photographs from 2005-2012. Jamel’s tireless commitment to documenting the true essence of people and culture and his most recent work in the field of philanthropy puts him in a class all by himself.
