Biography

Rebecca Bird was born in Washington State and lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. Bird holds a B.F.A. from the Cooper Union (2000), attended Yale Summer School (1999), and was a Fulbright Fellow to Japan (2000-1) in painting.

Rebecca Bird's highly detailed works are rooted in primary experience, in vision and perception filtered through the experience of inhabiting a specific body, place and time. Primarily known for her painting, she also works in film, animation, performance, and theater.

Rebecca Bird has exhibited her paintings throughout the US and abroad. In 2015 she will have solo exhibitions at William Holman Gallery, New York and Kopeikin Gallery, Los Angeles, and also exhibit at the Bronx Museum, the Bronx Art Space, and Geoffrey Young Gallery. She has exhibited her watercolor animation at the Everhart Museum and performed at the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, Issue Project Room, Brooklyn, the Armory Show and the Fumetto Festival, Luzern. Her painting is in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art, New York.

Bird is the recipient of the 2014 Chenven Foundation Grant, 2014 and 2013 Brooklyn Arts Council Community Arts Grants, and 2013 grants from Max's Kansas City Foundation and Change, Inc. She was a Keyholder Resident at The Lower East Side Printshop in 2012-3 and attended the Vermont Studio Center with an artist's grant in 2013. In 2012 she completed the commissioned project Danny Boy for Triple Canopy. Her work has appeared in New American Paintings, Harper's Magazine, The New York Times, Whitewall Magazine, The Huffington Post, Triple Canopy, and ArtForum.com.
