Presentation

Born in 1937 in Philadelphia, Marc Morrel is a self taught artist. He lives and works in the Netherlands.

After he settled in New York during the 60s, He became involved in the artistic world, which led him to practice with several forms of artistic expression. He was one of the first to use Acrylic paint. He practiced sculpting as well, he created pieces covered with painted fabric which had a revolutionary air with the beginning of the War of Vietnam. Searching for strong symbols which could have an impact in the American community, he chose to use the national flag, the "Star Spangled Banner" became a reference piece to which he added all sorts of political messages such as the hand grenade over an american flag pillow.

The pieces exhibited during the exposition of 1966 at the Stephen Radich Gallery provoked intense criticism and brought the artist to court. After eight years of procedure, the supreme court considered that the freedom of expression prevailed over the respect of the national symbol. But faced with death threats, Marc Morrel had to leave the United States and settled in Paris and later in London. But his pieces were banned in these countries as well, which pushed him to come back to the Netherlands.

His meeting with a Tibetan believer taught him a new way of spirituality, which he associated to his art.
He then left to India to discover ancient religion, which is based on meditation and communication between men and the spirits of nature.
During the 90s, He got inspired by the Cochiti culture from New Mexico to create his pieces. Thanks to the recordings made during the creation process of his pieces. He was able to create a reportage about the origin of his pieces and the 3 months process that took him to create his compositions. He is considered the inventor of auto biopics.

Light has always been a central element in his work, he uses it during the elaboration of his films or on its representation. Later on, the artist reconciled with his childhood dreams of wide open spaces and astronomy and depicted them in his pieces.

From 2010 to 2011, his revolutionary work was brought to light by the Kunstverein d'Hambourg and the Neuer Berliner Kunstverein during the exposition called "Freedom of Speech".
