Presentation

Marc Asnin is an American photographer, internationally famous, born in Brooklyn in 1961. He lives and works in New York.

His work has been published many times in newspapers and magazines such as Life, Fortune, The New Yorker, The New York Times Sunday Magazine, French Geo, La Repubblica, Le Monde,
and Stern.

He is mostly known for the project he led for several years on Charlie Henschke (his uncle and godfather). Since 1981, Marc Asnin photographed him with his family, making up an impressive collection of photographs that tell the story of a man who is a victim of a mental illness, poverty, drugs and a deep isolation.

This project is also a deconstruction of a heroic figure from his childhood. The images of Mark Asnin are disturbing, brutal and touching at the same time: Uncle Charlie sitting in the same chair for years, at his window, smoking alone. His son Joe, dying due to AIDS, Uncle Charlie remarried three times, getting a blow job from his druggy lover etc.
The artist spent 30 years taking pictures of this family (something which started to be a project for photography school), before they were published in a book.
