Pierre-François Grimaldi

Born in: 1969

France

Emergent Artist

Pierre-François Grimaldi was born in 1969. He devoted his Visual Arts studies to the New Realists, a current from which he draws the foundations of his work, but from which he took a certain distance in order to define his own language.

A “flâneur” in the streets of Paris, that’s where he finds the raw material for his collages depicting the urban traces he collects. The Marché d’Art Contemporain de la Bastille or sets of choreographer Christine Merli have enabled the public to discover the subtle modernity of his work.

His work carries the memory of the New Realists, particularly of Rotella, Villeglé and Raymond Hains. Grimaldi works with posters that he finds in Paris: the rarest of them are those from the '20s and ‘30s. He often discovers them in the Parisian metro, he tears them and takes them to his studio. His assemblages/collages, composed with the precision of a medieval calligrapher, are complex and fascinating works: they are pieces of history that could recompose the puzzle of the 21st century.
