Jean-Philippe Berger is a French artist, originally from Dijon born in 1968. He did a scientific course and initially worked in the innovation field, before turning towards a completely different sector and devoting himself to his passion: contemporary art.
In 2007, he created the Open Art Galerie in Dijon, which bought together a substantial catalog of works and artists. Moreover, Jean-Philippe Berger created works through mixed techniques. His paintings are special due to his free artistic approach, exploring several possibilities: techniques and various cultural references combine together to crate an imaginary world.
From the visual point of view, he experiments with mixed techniques through collages and paintings. Torn posters or photos are harmoniously combined with acrylic layers, stencils made with spray paint.
His themes are extremely rich as well: urban scenes, old vehicles but mainly famous celebrities and super heroes...The artist yearns to distance these images from their initial context and build a new composition, allowing the spectator to be a part of his painting and shape up his own story, by calling upon his sensitivity and imagination.
At time Hulk, at times Charlie Chaplin, the characters of his work derive from comics but also the world of cinama. Marilyn Monroe becomes a myth more than ever, by displaying Venus de Milo's face, Botticelli's cupid has a kind look, the lovers of Hotel de Ville of Robert Doisneau...
There are many examples and fusions between various cultural codes, from the most classic ones to the most popular ones, making up intriguing landscapes. Each symbol matters, the images are carefully chosen, they might be from newspapers, posters or even photos so that the author is able to be as pertinent as possible.
A new balance is created. The images are taken away from their initial context and are able to participate in the composition of a new story. Between Pop Art and Street Art, Jean-Philippe Berger's creations don't have any limits.
