Rafel Bestard

Born in: 1967

Spain

Refel Bestard was born in Palma de Mollorca, and began his career in the 80's after having studied at Beaux-Arts University in Barcelona. He currently teaches drawing at an Art school in his hometown.

His work is a mix of reality, inspired by his experiences and fantasies. He constantly tries to make visible the invisible, show his feelings, emotions, fantasies and dreams in an obvious manner. He includes surrealistic and realistic elements, but doesn't consider himself to be a surrealist. He doesn't like to be labeled.

Oil painting is key in his production. He is fascinated by the creation of his own pigments, giving him a closer and an intimate look on the subject. He doesn't follow any method strictly and doesn't plan, Bestard is very meticulous, almost a stickler for details-and goes with the flow. He needs this feeling to begin his painting.

His work explores fusion and the relation between the fundamental opposites: light and shadow, life and death.

Rafel Bestard has participated in several collective and personal exhibitions, and has displayed his work in several countries like Germany, Canada, China, U.S.A, France and Turkey. In 2012, one his paintings, "Then a moment gest and conceals"won the X Biennale of visual arts prize in the city of Albacete.
